Because of its large geography, Charleston MLS divides West Ashley into three regions: Inside I-526 (closest to Downtown and more urban), Outside I-526 to Rantowles (more suburban), and Rural West Ashley, which includes the towns of Hollywood, Meggett, Ravenel and Adams Run. So you will first need to choose how close you want to be to Downtown Charleston, and whether your lifestyle is more “urban” (stay inside I-526), suburban (outside I-526 will work), or rural (Rural West Ashley).

More information about West Ashley:

West Ashley generally refers to those suburbs of Downtown Charleston located west of the Ashley River and east of the Intracoastal Waterway. It began growing rapidly after the second World War with the return of thousands of servicemen to the large existing Charleston Air Base and the former Naval Base located in North Charleston. “Close-in” West Ashley is one of the more popular areas of Charleston because of affordable home prices, convenience to shopping, dining & entertainment, and its close proximity to Downtown Charleston and the entire Charleston area.

South Windermere was one of the first neighborhood shopping centers to spring up, followed by St. Andrews Shopping Center and others. Neighborhoods like Ashley Forest, Avondale, Byrnes Down, Carolina Terrace, Moreland, Oak Forest, South Windermere, Westwood and Windermere have become the rage among buyers looking to live in this affordably priced area located along Highways 17 and 61 just minutes to Downtown Charleston. As shopping areas in Avondale have urbanized and become more pedestrian-friendly, and other traditional shopping centers like South Windermere and St. Andrews have undergone transformations making them more people-friendly, home prices have continued their upward climb after the slump began in 2008. Shopping, dining, and public transportation are readily accessible in many areas of West Ashley, so many West Ashley neighborhoods have high walkability scores, a growing “must have” on many home-buying lists. West Ashley is also home to Charleston’s first “Greenway“, a dedicated trail roughly parallel to Hwy 17 that currently extends for about 8 miles with plans to extend it to 42 miles. The Greenway, a favorite with joggers and walkers, passes through and terminates just past South Windermere Shopping Center providing a green, walkable alternative through much of this area.
