The name “Charleston” has become synonymous with the multi-county Metropolitan Area bearing the same name, but it is also the historic coastal city more specifically referred to locally as the “Peninsula” or “Downtown“.  Visit our Charleston Land and Homes Slide Show to learn more about this unique area of Charleston.

The Charleston Trident Association of Realtors’ MLS splits the Peninsula into 2 basic regions north and south of US Highway 17.  Inside the Crosstown is the southern portion of the Peninsula – that’s everything south of Hwy 17 - and includes some of the most expensive real estate in the Charleston MLS.  300+ year old neighborhoods like South of Broad, The French Quarter, and Harleston Village (not “Charleston Village”) have seen tremendous long-term appreciation.  Outside the Crosstown - that’s everything north of Hwy 17 - you can find great homes in beautiful old neighborhoods like Hampton Park  and Wagener Terrace (both near The Citadel), single family homes in newer neighborhoods like Longborough,  or newer condos in The Bristol.  These are only some of the more recognizable neighborhoods – there are many wonderful neighborhoods across the Peninsula.
